The feeder outside our kitchen window froze solid during the last arctic blast. The Hummingbirds seemed to protest by chirping loudly and incessantly. Food must be scarce for them this time of year so we attempted to regularly thaw the feeder and place warm sugar water in it from time to time.

Serendipitous exposure, I’m happy to have noticed this on Porblogs :) I just joined the blogroll.
From the picture, I can understand the need to warm the sugar solution. One question though, aren’t you worried about the solution being too warm for the birds and harming them if the solution is too hot? I would just like to suggest that you let it cool completely before placing the feeder back outside. Better yet, bring the feeder inside at night and then bring it out again in the morning. This will ensure that the birds get the food that they need without the sugar solution being to warm for them to drink.
