The Hummingbirds Are Alright

The feeder outside our kitchen window froze solid during the last arctic blast. The Hummingbirds seemed to protest by chirping loudly and incessantly. Food must be scarce for them this time of year so we attempted to regularly thaw the feeder and place warm sugar water in it from time to time.

Gnarl Ridge Wildland Fire

We spent a scorcher of a Saturday-our thermometer topped out at 104.2ºF-mostly on the porch. Around 1pm we couldn’t help but notice the spectacular Gnarl Ridge Wildland Fire plume: The politics of wildland firefighting is a fascinating subject. Lots and lots and lots of taxpayer dough spent year after year after year…

Michelle put up the frame herself. When I arrived we hung the canvas and messed with the smoke flaps a bit before realizing we needed to cut and sand the smoke flap poles first.

Pine Engraver Beetle larvae(Ips pini)

Some of our trees are infected and we’re actively removing fuel and Pine Bark Beetle larvae habitat. I never thought logging would be fun. It is. It’s hard work too. The Oregon Department of Forestry has some useful information on the Pine Beetle here.
