The Art of Crowd Avoidance

For starters one way to avoid crowds is to take advantage of extreme weather and get out when most everyone is in. Yesterday was such a day on an abandoned trail in the Columbia River Gorge near Cascade Locks.

Some days are made for studio photography…

…but often, those are the days that are most fun to work outside.

My Stylin’ Stylist Darlene

Darlene cuts my hair. Shaves my head is more like it. Seven bucks a whack. I give her a 10 and she keeps the change. She’s been around Portland awhile and each time she whacks me(my hair!) I am reminded of a bygone era. An era that’s fading fast. We have a shoot scheduled for December which is part of a project titled Voices of Et Cetera. I’m really, really looking forward to it.

Primo Picking

Claudia and I experienced a banner day picking today. Chanterelles are more pleasant and are easier to clean when dry!

Mesdames et Monsieurs, “Start your lawnmower engines!”

You saw it here first folks. A good time was had by all last weekend east of Mt. Hood and no one was life-flighted to the hospital. Some of these rigs with swapped out snowmachine engines cruise up to 45mph.

This Just in From the Land of the Low, Low Tide

You guys…it’s 8:06PM (yeah, I know, 2006 hrs, but, “whatever”…) and it’s 91dgs outside…and I walked outside…and noticed a “chill” in the air…*NO SH*T*!!! I al-most put clothes on…what’s become of me?

The store-door-handles don’t burn the f*ck out of my hands anymore…I still drive around with my windows down, but I no longer forget my name or where I’m going…I know not to drink “the second beer,” because it has been outside with me for 10 minutes…I no longer sweat until it is 105+dgs and/or 30%+ humidity, whichever comes first…I haven’t seen my surfboards in weeks (in outside-exposed, un-air-conditioned storage) but, if they have heat-delamination, at least it’s cool enough that I can repair ‘em (the resin would dry like *that*…better back-off the catalyst). Ah, man, I think I’m one of *THEM* now…able to bring home a box of condoms (XXL, of course) without them exploding in the back of my car (VERY hard to explain at the car-wash…) I fear that I am at the point of “no deposit/no return”…I am Desert Folk…I’m going out to “the Coast” tomorrow…I guess I’d better pack the “moisture-wicking fleece” and a blanket or two…

Anyway, that’s my experience/story and I’m sticking to it…

Hey, I’m not kidding…it’s almost 2200hrs and it’s 85dgs and dropping…my outdoor candles have re-solidified into disgusting, grotesque but oddly-artistic shapes…the lizards move much more slowly…the same sprinkler puddles have been there for hours…a coat of paint took 10-minutes to dry…my spa-towel took at least an hour…I peed in the sideyard and it’s still there…

“Hot” is in the eye of the beholder…and those eyes are still moist…

OK, off to bed…maybe with a down comforter…

Mt. Adams-Southwest Chutes-29 June 2009

My likely last ski of the season was a grand one. Chris Hill, Blake Osmundsen, Trent Thelen and I bivied at the bustling Cold Springs trailhead Friday night and headed up 7,000 ft. or so to the top then skied down. Skied down most of the way at least. We did a wrinkle I’d never done before: traversing at 7,000 ft to the south side trade route instead of heading to the round the mountain trail and then walking the 3 miles back to Cold Springs. The verdict seemed to be that the traverse at 7k is better suited for earlier in the season or bigger snow years. We finished the day with cold brews at the car and Huckleberry shakes in Trout Lake. Yeeehaaaa!

One of My Favorite Things: Skiing to Ramona Falls

The tour to Ramona falls is one of my favorite things. Yesterday Steven, Ralph and I skied the route with a snowcat assist part way up the Palmer. It was a great day spent with friends on the mountain. We encountered a handfull of giants along the way.
